It appears Russia might absorb the Ukraine and so, naturally, the world of Bible prophecy is abuzz with Scripture about Gog of Magog from Ezekiel 38-39 despite the fact that the most trusted Bible maps place Magog in Turkey.
Since completely obvious geography doesn’t seem to matter to some, I want to explore two of the declarations I’ve seen floating around Twitter and various prophecy web sites, namely, “Putin is the Antichrist” and “Putin is Gog of Magog.” Why? Because I’m frustrated and it’s not because I think people are wrong. It’s because so many lovers of prophecy are missing the very things they so long to see and that’s so tragic to me.
Many people believe Ezekiel 38-39 is a pre-Armageddon invasion of Israel by Russia and Iran. What I’d like to know is, how is it we can have people who claim that Putin is the Antichrist and then proceed to use Ezekiel 38-39 as proof that he is Gog of Magog who is going to invade Israel before Armageddon? What’s he going to do? Invade twice? It’s either one or the other, isn’t it? If he’s the Antichrist, he’s going to invade only once and that’s what the Bible calls the Battle of Armageddon. If he’s Gog of Magog, and the Bible really does say it’s a pre-Armageddon invasion of Israel, then he’s not the Antichrist and he’s still only going to invade once. Do you see the disconnect? So, which is he? Gog or the Antichrist?
Let’s take a look.
Is Putin the Antichrist?
I like geography because geography doesn’t lie and Bible prophecy is full of geography. For example, Isaiah 10 says Jesus will be present on the earth to fight against the king of Assyria after which the remnant that returns to Israel will always rely on the Lord:
So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the pomp of his haughtiness.” [Isaiah 10:12]
Now in that day the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. [Isaiah 10:20]
This happens on the Day of the Lord and Assyria is not in Russia or Europe. Please read chapters 9-12 for the full context.
Isaiah 14 says this:
The Lord of hosts has sworn saying, “Surely, just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it will stand, to break Assyria in My land, and I will trample him on My mountains. Then his yoke will be removed from them and his burden removed from their shoulder. [Isaiah 14:24-25]
Jesus will physically trample this Assyrian on His mountains.
Micah 5, also, calls the Antichrist the Assyrian:
This One [Jesus] will be our peace. When the Assyrian invades our land, When he tramples on our citadels, Then we will raise against him Seven shepherds and eight leaders of men. They will shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword, The land of Nimrod at its entrances; And He will deliver us from the Assyrian When he attacks our land And when he tramples our territory. [Micah 5:5-6 NASB]
Read the whole chapter. Don’t just stop after verse 4. Again, Jesus will physically come to Israel’s aid when the Assyrian invades.
So, the question is: Is Putin king of the area of Assyria? The answer is no. Putin is not the Antichrist.
I used Assyria exclusively but there are many, many more geographic clues in Scripture in addition to these and they all point to the Antichrist coming to power in the Middle East not Europe or Russia. Here are a couple more:

Is Putin Gog of Magog?
So, Putin is not the Antichrist but is he Gog of Magog? Will Russia be leading an invasion of Israel before Armageddon?
To answer these questions, first we’ll ignore the geography I mentioned at the beginning which places Magog in Turkey and look at three passages from Ezekiel 38-39:
and you (Gog) will say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will go against those who are at rest, that live securely, all of them living without walls and having no bars or gates, [Ezekiel 38:11 NASB] (parentheses added by me)
This verse says Gog will go up against Israel which is described as a “land of unwalled villages” and a people who “live securely”. Can this be said of Israel today? This takes place during the “peace” of the 7-year tribulation [Daniel 9:27].
‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “Are you (Gog) the one of whom I spoke in former days through My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days for many years that I would bring you against them? [Ezekiel 38:17 NASB] (parentheses added by me)
If Gog is Putin, this verse says we should be able to find him in the pages of the other OT prophets. Where? You’d be hard-pressed to find this “other” individual but there is one individual that you will find – the Antichrist.
And, consider this last passage:
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, “Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name. “They will forget their disgrace and all their treachery which they perpetrated against Me, when they live securely on their own land with no one to make them afraid. “When I bring them back from the peoples and gather them from the lands of their enemies, then I shall be sanctified through them in the sight of the many nations. “Then they will know that I am the LORD their God because I made them go into exile among the nations, and then gathered them again to their own land; and I will leave none of them there any longer. “I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I will have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel,” declares the Lord GOD. [Ezekiel 39:25-29 NASB]
If Ezekiel 38-39 is a pre-Armageddon invasion of Israel led by Russia, how can Israel, afterward, “live securely on their own land with no one to make them afraid.” Is there no Battle of Armageddon coming? Is there no Antichrist coming?
Do you see the disconnect?
Ezekiel 38-39 is just another retelling of Armageddon from Ezekiel’s perspective. Gog is none other than the Antichrist of whom the prophets spoke in their Books and the Battle of Gog of Magog is none other than the Battle of Armageddon. So, the answer is no. Putin is neither.
It is my prayer that we would just read the words on the pages we’re reading (if we’re reading at all) and think about them. By doing so, we can eliminate a great deal of confusion and errancy for there are some amazing fulfillments of prophecy happening and this is not the time to be confused.

I knew Putin was the Antichrist about 4 years ago but people wouldn’t believe me I have been a prophet for years since the age of 26 I figured Putin out and it was believe it or not pretty easy. All I had to do is figure out the clues in the bible and the realization came through world events I was even predicting what the next headline would be and was right every time. I also have the evidence I own a Bronze Statue picture of Putin when he ruled as Gauis julius Augustus and yes it’s him He was one of the seven but although because he is a fallen Angel known as Apoloyon he probably ruled under different names or was of the Ancestry of one of the seven that ruled.
Jessika, i’m glad you are reader of my blog but i’ve just laid out a Scriptural case for Putin not being the A/C or Gog or even mentioned in prophecy at all and so i would ask how did you come to the conclusion? do you have any Scripture to back it up? perhaps we can go over it?
I learned who was the Antichrist through divine intervention through the word of God and also was shown what would happen in world events
and saw all of it fulfilled in the news on the internet I could actually predict the next event of Putin.
All I can say to prove my self is the fact that the Antichrist would be the king of the North Mentioned in the Book of Daniel
Well I knew there was only one north God would refer the farthest north and North of Israel If you read further the king of the north
in daniel becomes the Antichrist. Confirmation you can also find in Ezekiel 38 and 39 He is the Prince of Rosh and is from the land of Gog Magog Mesheck and Tubol Russia. He becomes great with a small people according to Daniel which is what he is doing now he is recruiting as many as he can. He has created a Eurasian union and will overpower Europe. He will destroy and make away many countries and pass through Ezekiel and will enter into the glorious land. How do I know for sure, because God Told me he was of the seven Roman rulers who ruled the Roman empire

you are right when you say that Daniel 11 calls the Antichrist the king of the north [transition begins @ Daniel 11:21].
Originally, Seleucid, one of Alexander’s generals ruled this area after Greece was split up [Daniel 7:6, 8:8]. Eventually, Antiochus Epiphanes became the ruler of this same area. So, when Daniel 11 calls the Antichrist the king of the north, he will, also, rule the same area as both of these men. this is why Daniel tells us about them. do you know what area this is? a good study Bible will identify it for you. you can also look it up online. historians call it the Seleucid Empire. look it up and see what area this is. it’s a geographic clue from Daniel and you can match the modern-day countries to it. this is the north kingdom from Daniel 11. try it. i don’t want to just tell you. it’s a good exercise.
Well I really havn’t read all of Daniel because I can only receive bits and pieces I can’t read the bible myself and understand it
it might seem weird to you I have never been taught by anyone but the spirit of God his word so I can’t just read it and understand It has to be revealed to me first otherwise I can’t understand. I could read and read and never understand until God chooses I am not your average Christian God trained me up and never learned by men so I can’t
study it and understand unless christ chooses to allow me to see it. I don’t study the bible till God gives me the urge because I know he is gonna teach me something and I really want to know I have the important sound doctrine but everything else only comes when he chooses

People should not debate on who the Antichrist is because it causes contention and arguments If you know who it is and it’s been confirmed
with signs following don’t try to convince anyone because you will never be able cause only God reveals the truth whom he chooses and arguing and debating won’t get you anywhere. People have to know through divine intervention and not what someone else says but if they wish to know tell them only through the spirit of truth. if they don’t see it they weren’t meant to know, because God would have revealed it. he always reveals it first to his servants the prophets.
The only way you can know who the Antichrist is is the word of God and a Good understanding of world events
God always uses world events to confirm prophecy that is written You take what you understand from the former prophets
Then and only then will God show you if you study carefully and ask God He shows you himself and it is not learned on your own
But is a gift that God gives to understand the beginning to the end we can understand nothing on our own God and only God chooses to reveal it
to us only then can we place the words into world events the human mind cannot understand the things of God for they are spiritually discerned
this means a person can only understand Gods word when he chooses to reveal it or if you really want to know you study hard and meditate
spiritually on what you read and he will answer sometimes it’s fast sometimes it’s month’s sometimes days It’s called the gift of Prophecy

The name of the Antichrist becomes obvious through the events that you see fulfilled in world events according to his word

well, i hear you, but there’s more than just these passages in Ezekiel and Isaiah in support of an Islamic Antichrist. here’s the challenge i would present to anyone because it’s what started my quest into Bible prophecy:
The Old Testament prophets are littered with the names of the nations Christ judges upon His return. Can you find any nation listed that is not located in the Middle East?
consider, also, Daniel 11’s geography. this is one of the most important chapters in Bible prophecy and it is often overlooked.
i do appreciate your willingness to consider other theories. many who have been exposed to these things turn a blind eye without any due diligence. here is some more geography in Bible prophecy. have a look when you have the chance.

in my view, the Pope will either stand up to Islam or be deluded by it like so many of our Western leaders and Catholics, along with the rest of us, will be persecuted. other than that, the Pope isn’t mentioned in Bible prophecy. he’s not the Antichrist or the False Prophet. the longer the Church focuses on him, the longer it is in the dark about Islam. look how far along we are and a vast majority of the Church has no idea because we are concentrating on the wrong area of the world!
consider Islam also has end-time prophecy and it is the exact opposite of Christian prophecy.
I think, that Book of Ezekiel is describing two different Gog Magog wars. First one is the war from Ezekiel 39, that guarantee Israel a peace. Then Ezekiel 38 is about next war between Gog and Israel, but this time Israel doesn’t expect attack, because it feels safe after previous victory.
Russia is NOT the true north of Israel, as Jessica and many others have thought. Watch this satellite view of true north on our globe, and the connecting line with that point and Israel. Through which country does the line from true north to Israel run through? It’s NOT Russia!
i agree. in Jeremiah’s day, Israel was invaded “from the north land”. it was the Babylonian Empire that invaded.
Hello, what is the end-time prophecy of Islam all about? What is the “scenario” in the Islamic belief?
We are given some other places/people as help when working with Ezekiel tecsts. These are the prince of Rosh,[a] Meshech, and Tubal, Gomer and Togarmah. Many scholars says that these names sounds like ”Russia” (Rosh – russia, Meshech – Moscow etc), meaning that Gog will be from Russia etc.
However, when looking closely at these names, we will find some interesting details, not absolutely denying these guesses, but not confirming this way of ”thinking” about these texts either.
First of all; ”The prince of Rosh”, is not the correct translation from Hebrew. The meaning of the letters:
נְשִׂיא, רֹאשׁ מ
Is “Chief Prince of” or “President of” (try Google translate) meaning that Gog is a president, a leader.
The KJVs translation is more accurate and precise:
“Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal…”
Gog is a chief prince, maybe a president, ruling Magog (apparently) but what about Meschech and Tubal? Is he a ruler of these places also, or is he originally from this place – The Chief Prince OF Meshech and Tubal? (It is interesting that Mesech and Tubal might be Georgia and that Putin Vladimir seem to come from this country) These places are mentioned here, but not among the allies in verse 5 and 6.
Anyhow – this person Gog, is a leader with a great army. In addition, he have some allies. They might be Mesech and Tubal, but for sure, these are:
“Persia, Ethiopia,[b] and Libya[c] are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with you.” (Ez. 38:5-6)
The names given for “Persia, Ethiopia and Libya” are somehow misleading. Persia is Iran, as we all know, but the area of the ancient Persia, was quite bigger, also including todays Iraq, Syria and Saudi Arabia. The expansion of extreme groups, as IS, may create some concern about what is going on in these areas. “Ethiopia” and “Libya” are not precisely the places covering these countries today (why it is in my opinion misleading to use these names). The correct words for these two areas, mentioned together with Persia, is Cush and Put.
The Cushitic-speaking peoples today comprise the Agaw, Oromo, Somalia, Afar and and several other tribes meaning that Cush covers the whole horn of Africa; Djibouti, Erithrea, Ethiopia and Somalia, (Sudan) all the way up to Egypt.
Put, which is translated Libya, is more likely the Countries covering the northern coasts of Africa.
Today it might be easier to understand that the Islamic northern Africa together with Iran will attack Israel, than the Horn of Africa with the “Christian” Ethiopia, will do the same. However, with the strong influence of Islam in some parts of Ethiopia, Somalia, Erithrea and also Egypt and Sudan, the picture could change very fast.
Regarding Togarmah, this is a person appearing in the Book of Genesis, chapter 10, and he was related to Japhet. Today he should cover the peoples in the Caucasus and western Asia, including the Georgians, the Armenians and some Turkic peoples. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Togarmah)
Regarding Gomer, these countries are harder to find today, as he was the son of Japhet, and therefore a long time ago was spread over many parts of Europe. However, we know that he is from Europe, as Japhet represents the Indo-European people.
Gogs’ army seems, in other words, to be more or less all the countries surrounding Israel. Amazingly Israel has until then survived smaller wars and attacks, but now It is just a question of time before they will lose, facing all the countries in “the world”. Nevertheless, the hand of God will defeat this enormous army, Ezekiel 39:3-4:
Will the US be conquered? How will we play out in end times?

i’m not sure the US will be conquered by another country, but it’s influence will be greatly diminished. it already has been. there is little mention of the West in Bible prophecy but we have to remember, the most important country in the world to God is Israel, not any country in the West. And so prophecy is centered around Israel.
there are some who believe the US will come to war against the Antichrist however, the text doesn’t give that specific of an answer. it appears, though, that the West will go to war against him. this is what it says about the West… Where is the West in Bible Prophecy? [Daniel 11]
Obama rang the dinner bill for the Arab Spring, the world is never been the same since . The countries the Daniel talks about, Egypt and Libya Obama swept through those .
I also believe it is turkey . I have thought that for years, and of course everybody watches left behind and they are instant scholars . I totally agree, to understand prophecy you need to know history every time I read Revelation, and go back to the old testament there are puzzle pieces in every book . There is no doubt, who has killed more saints and prophets ? If I understood what I have read, you are saying that Gog and the Antichrist are one and the same. If this is true then Gog (in the Book of Ezekiel 38 39) should suffer the same fate as the Antichrist (in the Book of Revelations). That fate being “thrown alive into the Lake of Fire”. Gog in Ezekiel 38 39 was “Buried” in the valley of Hamon Gog. I don’t think they are the same.
