A mass public display of idol worship in Wisconsin reminiscent of the Israelites’ idolatry in the OT

I was immediately struck at the similarity between this event and the frequent rebellion of the Israelites throughout the Old Testament.

In fact, the past few days I’ve been reading through Judges 17-20 about Micah’s seemingly inexplicable gravitation toward idolatry and also a civil war that ensued during the same time.

Micah’s mother, after blessing him by the Lord, encourages him to make an idol out of silver so they can worship it. A Levite priest happens upon Micah’s house and also agrees to participate in the idolatrous act by becoming Micah’s personal priest.

Meanwhile, the Danites, seeking an inheritance in the land, came to Micah’s house. They inquired of the Lord about their success for invading the town of Laish through the Levite priest. The priest told them they would be successful. After they took the town, they proceeded to take Micah’s idols and set them up to worship them. The Levite priest then agreed to become priest for the Danites knowing they were worshiping an idol and not God. Just strange. It really highlights man’s confusion about God and our tendency and desire to worship anything but the one, true God.

How many times do we read this in the OT?

In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.
[Judges 17:6 NASB]

There was often no righteous king to lead Israel in the ways of the Lord and so every man used that as an excuse to sin even though they knew the truth. It’s not unlike what is happening today.
