Beast Kingdoms and Biblical Math // Revelation 17:9-11

IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION John tells us there are seven biblical world kingdoms, or beast kingdoms, that will rule on the earth throughout time with one making an end-time, repeat appearance as an eighth ruled by the Antichrist. This is where we get the idea of a revived kingdom.

// Revelation 17:9-11 NET  (This requires a mind that has wisdom.) The seven heads are seven mountains the woman sits on. They are also seven kings: [10] five have fallen; one is, and the other has not yet come, but whenever he does come, he must remain for only a brief time. [11] The beast that was, and is not, is himself an eighth king and yet is one of the seven, and is going to destruction.

// Revelation 13:3 NET  One of the beast’s heads appeared to have been killed, but the lethal wound had been healed. And the whole world followed the beast in amazement;

John says the Antichrist’s end-time kingdom is the eighth of these kingdoms, a “revived” version of one of the seven previous. How can we know which of the seven it is? With a little biblical math, we can find an answer.

// …They are also seven kings: five have fallen… [10]

The “five [that] have fallen,” meaning previous to John, are generally agreed upon as:

1. Egypt
2. Assyria
3. Babylon
4. Medo-Persia
5. Javan/Yavan/Macedonia/Greece

// …one is… [10]

The “one [that] is,” meaning at the time of his writing, is Rome.

6. Rome

// …the other has not yet come… [10]

The other, the one that is future to John, had “not yet come” at the time of his writing.

7. Future to John

So, these are the seven we have to choose from:

1. Egypt
2. Assyria
3. Babylon
4. Medo-Persia
5. Javan/Yavan/Macedonia/Greece
6. Rome
7. Future to John

Can we narrow it down a little more? Yes.

// The beast that was, and is not, is himself an eighth king and yet is one of the seven… [11]

John says one of the beasts “that was, and is not,” meaning not at the time of his writing, is the eighth.

Which biblical world kingdoms were previous to John, but were not at the time of his writing? The first five. This means we can eliminate six and seven from the list.

6. Rome
7. Future to John

That leaves these five for us to choose from:

1. Egypt
2. Assyria
3. Babylon
4. Medo-Persia
5. Javan/Yavan/Macedonia/Greece

THE QUESTION: Which one of these five biblical world kingdoms is mentioned in the Book of Revelation by name as being destroyed at the time of the end? This is the one that is to be revived.
